Every farm has different needs so we are flexible and tailor our services to your farm. We offer beef herd services which recognise that the needs of a beef farm are different to those of a dairy farm. Our vets are keen to become more involved in your farm herd, advising on herd health and bull choices amongst other things. Any herd health policies we implement have to be cost effective and have a full understanding of your herd. All of our vets are keen to provide a herd health plan that is tailored to your farm.

Bull/cow fertility visits

Beef farm herd fertility is key; a calf per cow per year for suckler herds is a key target. We use a thorough approach to help suckler herds optimise fertility, including disease control and nutrition, calving block management and bull breed choices. We encourage regular routine herd fertility checks for our farm clients. Suckler herds should have their herds PD'd on farm as prompt detection of cows not in calf can reduce your costs.

At Westfield Farm Vets we run our own fully staffed laboratory and have links with an external laboratory for more complex diagnostics.

Youngstock farm services

We use the most up to date medicines for sick calves. We put in place youngstock treatment protocols and provide training for our farm clients to promptly diagnose and treat common issues. We can advise on how herd management and nutrition could be improved to help calf health and growth rates within your suckler herd on your farm.

We offer informative talks on suckler herd subjects to help you improve your farm's performance.

Emergency services

We offer 24 hour cover for lambing and sick sheep. All our farm vets are capable and experienced in difficult lambings and performing lambing caesareans.

Routine sheep procedures

We regularly undertake sheep farm procedures such as lameness assessments, blood sampling and even performing a ram vasectomy on farm. We can also show you and your farm staff how to perform routine tasks such as tailing and rubber ring castrating.

Flock health planning

Flock Health Planning is part of a modern sheep farm. Each farm needs a unique yearly plan of activity to drive farm health status and productivity. It is vital to helping avoid problems such as wormer resistance and introducing new diseases.

Tup vasectomies

A ram which has had a vasectomy can be used to bring your ewes into season prior to lambing. This enhances fertility as well as tightening your lambing period. After your ram has had a vasectomy he should not be used for at least 8 weeks as he may still be fertile.

If you would like arrange a ram vasectomy, please contact Westfield Farm Vets on 01749 673239 or email westfield@vetsomerset.co.uk
